Discover the creative world of Barbara Stauffacher Solomon, whose bold Supergraphics at The Sea Ranch brought her international attention in 1966. This exhibition looks beyond those celebrated designs to explore more than six decades of work spanning graphic design, architecture, landscape, painting, and books. Trained in Swiss graphic design in Basel and later in architecture at Berkeley, Solomon brought a distinctive perspective to California’s built and imagined landscapes.

Curated by Martin Strickland, Why? Why Not? features rarely seen material from the artist’s estate and a new Supergraphic realized from her designs on YBCA’s walls. At its center is Good Mourning California (1992), her incisive exploration of the state’s landscapes, broken promises, and enduring myths of paradise—an opportunity to consider the connections among modern design, architecture, and California’s cultural identity.
