Docomomo Tour Day for 2025 highlights Sacred Spaces in Berkeley, just south of campus. Join us on Saturday, October 11th for a walking tour lead by Chad DeWitt, vice president of the Northern California chapter. On our tour, we’ll trace the evolution of Bay Area church design seeing examples of First, Second and Third Bay modernism, ending with an example of Brutalism. 

The tour will feature:

  • 1898 First Unitarian, by Albert Schweinfurth

  • 1967 Newman Center, designed by Mario Ciampi (interior)

  • 1974 St. John’s Presbyterian, by Ostwald and Kelley (interior)

Along our walk, we’ll briefly discuss

  • 1958 YWCA, by Joseph Esherick

  • 1910 First Church of Christ, Scientist, by Bernard Maybeck

  • 1910 Old St. John’s Presbyterian, by Julia Morgan

This walking tour covers a distance totaling two miles, so please be mindful of any mobility issues and wear comfortable shoes.
