DOCOMOMO-NOCA SUPPORTS SAN FRANCISCO MODERN CONTEXT STATEMENT

In February 2011, Docomomo-NOCA submitted a letter of support to the Historic Preservation Commission for the adoption of the San Francisco Modern Context Statement. Several Docomomo-NOCA board members participated in the peer review process for the context statement, authored by Mary Brown of the Planning Department. The document provides a much-needed tool for historians, buildings owners, city officials, and others to holistically evaluate the potential significance of modern resources in the City.

APPLETON & WOLFORD LIBRARIES IN SAN FRANCISCO

The San Francisco-based architecture firm of Appleton and Wolford designed 8 branch libraries in San Francisco between 1950 and 1966. The libraries are innovative examples of mid-twentieth century design that have a strong domestic character, with overhanging pitched roofs, fireplaces and outdoor reading terraces. Multiple branches have come under threat of demolition or insensitive alteration in the past several years. DOCOMOMO NOCA has advocated for preservation of all the libraries, and supports landmark designation of the libraries as part of a dis-contiguous historic district. The Ortega Library was demolished in 2009, and the North Beach Branch remains threatened. DOCOMOMO NOCA members conducted an informal survey of Appleton & Wolford-designed libraries in April 2009, and found that many of these buildings posses a high level of architectural integrity. Previous advocacy efforts have included writing letters of support to the Historic Preservation Commission and San Francisco Planning Department.
